Ayyappankovil Sree Dharmasastha Temple is having a long history of around four lakhs of years. The history tells us that the temple had been built and demolished many times in the past. It is believed that the Ayyappankovil temple is one among the ' Panchamahakshethras' - (five huge temples) built by 'Parasurama' in Dwapara Yuga. (ie., approximately four lakhas years ago). These five temples were built for 5 'Bhavas' of Sree Ayyappan. Aaryankavu, Achancovil, Kulathupuzha, Sabarimala and Ayyappankovil are the five temples built by Parasurama. It is said that after building up Sabarimala temple Parasuraman came to Ayyappankovil and performed 'Thapasu' to plead Lord Ayyappa. Lord Ayyappa gave 'darsanam' to Parasurama and asked him to make a temple at Ayyappankovil for him. He advised him to make a 'Vigraham' with 'anjanasila'. Parasurama made the temple for Lord Ayyappa. He gave responsibility of offering poojas according to 'tanthrasasthra' to some brahmins there. With highest devotion they offered poojas to Lord Ayyappa three times a day. Lord Ayyappa became happy and blessed the village with all the richness.
